My Bōgle!

What's a Bōgle?
Well, Bōgle is actually an old Scottish word for mythological creatures.  Similar to the Gaelic bòcan and the German bögge, these terms cover a wide range of legendary ghost-like monsters.  They come in many shapes and sizes, and many of them have magical powers.  They are fantastically mischievous creatures that love to pull pranks and generally terrorize and annoy others.

Where are they?
Everywhere.

Then, why haven't I seen a Bōgle?
You stopped looking…

Between your first cup of coffee on your way to work and your primetime TV each night, you stopped looking for the fantastic and magical.  You live in the Mundane World, and these creatures live in the Fae World.  The Fae World is made up of all those wonderful things out of children's stories and ancient legends.  And even though these worlds co-exist in the same space, only those who are truly looking can see between them.

So, how do I learn to see them?
Well, to do that you need to go back to how you saw the world as a kid.  Most children see all sorts of Fae creatures.  Whether it's their imaginary friend or the monster under the bed – they completely believe that Bōgles exist and, therefore, can see them.  You must believe in the world outside of your own to begin sighting Bōgles again.

What kind's should I look for?
Here are four common kinds with a description and brief history for each.

The Grimalkin (grĭ-môl'-kĭn):

The Grimalkin are large evil-looking she-cats that came originally from the Highlands of Scotland.  They are considered ill-tempered Fae creatures that are extremely fierce and mean-spirited.   They were commonly sited throughout the Middle Ages, and were popular "familiars" (magical companions) to witches and warlocks in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Pixie ACTIVE.gif

  Pixies (pĭk-sēs):

Pixies are small elf-like Faeries with wings much like a dragonfly.  They commonly wear clothes of green and other forest colors, and most have reddish hair.   They are sometimes called "The Little People" and are usually more mischievous than malevolent.  Pixies are highly intelligent and are skilled at all sorts of magic.   Their origins are unknown, but they are most often seen in southwest England (around Devon and Cornwall).

Drake ACTIVE.gif

 The Drake (drāk):

Drakes are smaller cousins of the dragon.  They are wingless dinosaur-like reptiles with stunning magical power and very short tempers.  Drakes have armored scale-covered bodies and breathe deadly fire when angered.  Drakes, like their dragon relatives, come from all over the globe.   Sightings and legends of their terrible deeds range from the Middle East, China, South America and all over Europe.

Wookalar ACTIVE.gif

 The Wookalar (wuk'-ôl-är):

Similar to the Alma of China and the Yeti of Siberia the Wookalar is a wild forest-dwelling creature with both beast and man-like traits.   These mythical creatures lack magical abilities, but possess incredible strength and unbridled rage.   Thought be the descendants of the great spirit of Ysgithyrwyn (the giant boar King Arthur hunted), Wookalar sightings have been limited to the English islands.

How do I control them?
That's the easy part – You name it.   Once you name your Bōgle, it's yours to command.

Ok, now what do I do with them?
Well, Bōgles are highly competitive and love to play games – especially ones that involve beating up on their Bōgle buddies!  There are several types of games to choose from, but you can count on all of them including a great deal of Bōgle butt-kicking.
